Challenge

As one of the nation's largest blood banks and blood research institutions, Bloodworks faces huge industry shifts: nationwide, blood bank revenue had fallen over 50% in 5 years due to rapid changes in healthcare, yet costs were increasing and the need to fund basic research remained pressing. The organization had tried a traditional capital campaign, but it was not sustainable, nor enough to address underlying challenges in their business model. So Bloodworks turned to Altruist to examine its $180m annual business to determine a path forward in a challenging environment.

Results

Altruist framed a new business plan that identified over $250m in new revenue targets, which resulted in a study that uncovered over 30 new multimillion-dollar marketable intellectual property assets. Altruist also drove the creation of a new C-level position to execute plan and monetization pathways, deployed a new organization-wide executive dashboard, and advanced new revenue strategies and staffing focusing on impact capital and large philanthropic investments.
